Artist Update from Carolyn Thompson

As the artist in residence for Ryedale for the Unfolding Origins Project I’ve become fascinated with the World War I Appeals Papers held within the North Yorkshire Archives. These papers are some of the few remaining of their kind in the country. Within these documents I’ve identified men who worked on the land, in specific parts of the North York Moors, who were sent to war after appealing against conscription. Using this information I have begun a series of walks between the places they were recorded as living or working before they left for war and the rolls of honour or memorials that now hold their names. Along the way I have recorded the flora I have passed. Drawings of these plants and flowers will be incorporated into the final artwork I produce during the residency.
