Yambe Tam is an artist and ordained Zen Buddhist creating contemplative experiences through sculpture, video games, and immersive installations. In her recent work with Chrysalis Arts Development, Yambe has created five sculptural walking staffs each representing an important ecological link in the region’s geological history: glacier, limestone, river, plant, and animal.

This July, Yambe will lead a small procession of local North Yorkshire artists through the Yorkshire Dales. The path will trace the ancient movements of ice, water, and stone. The staffs are inspired by shakujo, Buddhist walking staffs used during travel and pilgrimage in ancient times. The five staff carrying figures will follow the order of the ecological succession they appeared in the landscape, connecting geological and human scales of time.

The procession will end in a meditation in nature where participants will reflect on questions of efficiency, sustainability, time, desire, and energy.

Event Details

Starting in Airton at 2 pm, it will last approximately 1.5–2 hours, including a meditation and informal Q&A with the artist at the end. 

Meeting place: Village Green (Please do not park around the village green as there is limited parking here for residents)

Please wear sensible footwear and clothing for the weather, ie. waterproofs if wet, hats and sunscreen if hot, and bring a cold drink with you. There is also a farm shop in Airton for tea, coffee and toilet facilities before/after the event.

Although the procession will take place on a well-worn path, please be aware there are a couple of stiles and tight bridges to cross. Therefore we apologise but the route may not be suitable for those with access issues. Tea and coffee will be served at The Art Depot in Gargrave after the event for those that are passing.

Please note: This event is not suitable for children or young people under the age of 16. The event is not suitable for dogs. Please arrive five minutes early as the event will start at 2 pm prompt.

About the Work

The work culminates from Yambe’s Artist Residency with Chrysalis Arts Development in Spring 2023. This project is funded by Arts Council England. 

Chrysalis Arts Development is a North Yorkshire-based arts organisation. They help visual artists develop environmentally responsible practices and connect audiences in the rural North with high quality visual arts.
