Seminars and six artists commissions with mentoring
This pilot project offered artists the opportunity of undertaking a paid commission whilst being supported by members of Chrysalis through each stage of the commissioning process. The project was developed in collaboration with the Interpretation Officer for the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and was designed to complement other interpretation work being undertaken by the Park and to give the artists the fullest possible experience of working in a 'live' situation with input from an experienced commissioner.
A series of free introductory seminars were held which gave an intensive introduction to the commissioning process and also to the training project itself. The second seminar introduced the brief for the project, which was for six temporary artwork commissions for a range of possible sites in and around the Malham area.

Of twenty artists who submitted design proposals, six were awarded the commissions: Stephen Bailey, a sculptor from Leyburn, North Yorkshire; Janette Ireland, a mosaic artist from Bentham, North Yorkshire; Nicola Bird, ceramicist from Harrogate, North Yorkshire; Karen Lennox, a photographer from Thirsk, North Yorkshire; Martin Heron, a sculptor from Bradford and Joanna Millet, a video artist from Hull.
Each artist was allocated one of the two Artistic Directors of Chrysalis Arts; Rick Faulkner or Kate Maddison as a mentor, they were responsible for providing ongoing contact and any necessary advice to the artists during the production of the works. Each artist was required to engage with the local community in the area where the work was to be sited as an integral part of the commission. The artworks remained in place for a period of five months until the end of August 2002.
